John has worked extensively in higher education since 1989. He has experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes, teacher training, learning development and academic support, staff development, curriculum development and quality enhancement.
He has worked at a wide range of UK higher education institutions, including the University of Brighton, City University, Oxford Brookes University, University of Reading and Buckinghamshire New University, as well as universities in Türkiye and Qatar. He has also delivered staff development workshops on inclusive assessment communication for Advance HE and at the University of Limerick, University College Cork and the University of Leeds.
John has led on the accreditation of a number of Advance HE Fellowship programmes, including most recently one of the very first to be accredited under the new PSF (2023). He has been involved in the teaching, mentoring and assessment of hundreds of Fellowship applications from Associate to Senior level via both taught and CPD-based experiential routes.
He has extensive experience of supporting staff in the development of teaching and learning practices, strategic leadership and enhancement of assessment and feedback processes at the institutional level and in the development of countless programmes, modules and CPD courses across a full range of levels and disciplines, including programmes accredited by a range of professional standards and regulatory bodies.
John has completed both the Advance HE Professional Development Course for External Examiners and the Institutional Development of External Examiners Programme and has worked as an external examiner in his own right.
John has an MA in Media-Assisted Language Teaching from the University of Brighton (1998), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from Oxford Brookes University (2008). He received his Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) from Coventry University in 2024. He has research interests in inclusive assessment communication and positive reflection for staff development and wellbeing. He is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and has an Advance HE CATE award (2019).
